Measuring everyday creativity: A Rasch model analysis of the Biographical Inventory of Creative Behaviors (BICB) scale

Research on everyday creativity—the “little c” creative activities people do in their lives—commonly uses self-report scales to assess people’s engagement different activities. The present research presents a detailed psychometric analysis of the Biographical Inventory Creative Behaviors (BICB), 34-item yes/no checklist common that has become one most popular measures behaviors. Based sample 2,359 adults, reliability, dimensionality, item fit, difficulty, and test information were evaluated from Rasch model perspective. Overall, BICB shows good evidence for score reliability appears essentially unidimensional; small cluster misfitting locally dependent items flagged impairing unidimensionality. items’ difficulty level was generally moderate suitable scale’s intended populations purposes. Differential functioning (DIF) based gender age, estimated via tree recursive partitioning methods, found notable gender-based DIF (generally reflecting culturally gendered qualities some activities) but little age-based DIF. Taken together, many strengths. Some opportunities future scale refinement are discussed.
